India is a bundle of contradictions.
The land that upholds family values and traditions, also inspires men to sire literature like the Kamasutra, at the same time. It boasts of the highest number of arranged marriages, but shies away from the growing percentage of cheating men. This article shall provide a statistical insight on the issue of male infidelity.
Let’s face it. Nearly 75% of Indian men, whether married or committed, end up cheating on their respective partners. The reasons for their infidelity range from the banal thrill of the act, to full-fledged adultery.
Cheating is more rampant in men under 30. Experts believe that the recklessness of youth inspires most men to take risks on secure relationships to explore an alternate flavour in life.
If classified according to the class structure, then cheating is more common in the upper and upper middle classes. Since the working class men are too much focussed on making ends meet, the luxury of entertaining or seducing other women is not viable. Therefore, the instances of infidelity in the working class are fewer.
The upper class approach to seducing women has transcended the usual movies-and-dinner style. Men are more upfront about their requests. An average request entails a short trip, sightseeing, a weekend getaway, or just a direct ‘take-you-home’.
In comparison to women, men have lesser chances of seeking emotional gratifications in an affair. Men tend to look for physical satisfaction that is otherwise absent in their relationships or marriages. Thus, extra-marital affairs among married folk account for 30% of the total number.
The more viable places for engaging in infidelity range from the workplace, neighbourhood to an online chat room. Various websites open portals specifically catering to men seeking an affair.
7. Kinsey Survey
In a survey conducted by the Kinsey Institute, the most common response for the reason why men cheat was finding their soulmate after their marriage and subsequently losing interest in their current spouse.
Infidelity in men is influenced by certain social and demographic factors like the tediousness of a long married life, a highly promiscuous sex life before marriage, one’s location in the city, and peer influence. One is likely to cheat on their partner when away and in a metropolitan city.
In the same survey, respondents who had reported that their relationships were happy were the ones to report an infidelity occurrence with the same partner. This goes on to prove that ahappy relationship is not the correct index for asserting the chances for infidelity in men.
Internet pornography and their classification of ‘cheating’ porn have been stated as an influence for most men. Many pornographic channels fuel the thrilling idea of cheating on their spouse or partners. This provides a sense of thrill, and invites a great number of experimental urges in men.
11. Divorce Rates
Infidelity is viewed much liberally in the contemporary times and most men think that it is not a ‘big deal’ to cheat, yet it is the reason behind 20% of the total percentage of marriage annulments in the country.
One neither advocates nor sympathises with male infidelity. At the end of the day, cheating is an unfair treatment meted out to one’s partner. While some cultures can choose to take drastic steps to prevent cheating, there is nothing that one can do to change one’s sense of morality.
