Even the most beautiful of women that grace our TV screens and the covers of our magazines were once told they were “too ugly for Hollywood”.
These women, however, didn’t give up on their dream and stood for something. They didn’t come to Hollywood to be approved of.
1. Chrissy Teigen
Chrissy Teigen was told, in preparation for a photoshoot for retail brand Forever 21 that she was “too heavy” for a career in modelling.
Sports Illustrated didn’t seem to agree, because everyone knows what happened from there. John Legend also disagrees, clearly. Oh, and the rest of the world, also.
2. Sarah Jessica Parker
Sarah Jessica Parker has been slated her whole career, and in 2008 she was even voted “Unsexiest Woman Alive” by Maxim.
We doubt she cares, after her Sex And The City success, successful marriage to Matthew Broderick (married since 1997!) and their beautiful twins.
3. Kat Dennings
She’s currently known for her role on the US sitcom 2 Broke Girls and strong stance on female empowerment, but it’s hard to believe that once upon a time, not so long ago, Kat was told to change everything if she wanted to make it anywhere.
She was told to change her teeth, her tan, her weight, pretty much the whole thing.
4. Jessica Chastain
Jessica Chastain, one of the sexiest female stars alive, has not heard people call her attractive until in recent years.
When she first started out in Hollywood, she was regularly advised to change her signature red hair to a blonde look.
5. Winona Ryder
As a teen, Winona was told mid-audition that she just “didn’t have it”.
Thanks to her family’s support, she went on to become a Tim Burton favorite and she ended up dating the most desired heartthrob of the 90s, Johnny Depp.
6. Minka Kelly
When Minka was just 19, a Playboy Bunny offered to boost Minka’s chances in starting her career by putting her in contact with a plastic surgeon.
The surgeon told her she needed a large amount of work done. Luckily, Minka gave it a pass and ended up with parts in 500 Days Of Summer and Friday Night Lights.
7. Meryl Streep
One of the most accomplished women in Hollywood auditioned for King Kong in 1972.
The film’s producer Dino De Laurentiis asked his son in Italian: “Why did you bring me this ugly thing?”, to which Streep replied in fluent Italian: “I’m sorry I’m not pretty enough to be in King Kong.”
8. Reese Witherspoon
When Reece first started auditioning, she was told by all kinds of people within the industry that she wasn’t tall enough, smart enough or pretty enough for Hollywood. Thankfully, she was too stubborn to care.
9. Lizzy Caplan
Lizzy Caplan and her friend Lindsday Sloane were once told they weren’t pretty enough for the WB Network.
Later, Caplan started her career by playing the outcast Janice Ian in Mean Girls. Now, she’s a household name in Hollywood and has appeared on several shows such as True Blood and New Girl and Masters of Sex.
10. Mindy Kaling
When Mindy auditioned for a sketch show playing herself, she was rejected because her character “wasn’t pretty enough”.
Since that gig, she moved on and launched her own massively successful TV show, The Mindy Project.
11. Lea Michele
The amazingly talented Lea Michele, of Glee fame, was advised at the young age of 13 to get a nose job. Well, she didn’t and look at her now. Take that, Hollywood!
12. Nia Vardalos
Nia Vardalos got dumped by her agent, after being told: “You are not fat enough to be a character actress, and you’re not pretty enough to be a leading lady. Plus, there are no Greek roles. So I can no longer represent you.”
So, what did Nia do in response? She embraced her roots and made her own lead in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, the highest grossing rom-com of all time. ALL TIME!
